It is safe to say that 29ers have finally come into their own. Let's put aside the fact that Gary Fisher, the grandfather of mountain biking, has been pushing the concept since the early nineties. Let's also put aside the fact that there is now a plentiful selection of tires, forks, and frames. Been to an Ontario Cup race lately? Well let's also put aside the fact that there are more 29ers racing at this elite level than ever before.

Most significantly, 2009 marked the first season that manufacturers brought this revolutionary technology to mainstream price points. That is a sure sign that the 29er is no fad and marks an historical shift in mountain bike history. 2010 sees that trend continue with more new models than ever before and continued technological refinement.

The advantages are numerous:

  • increased cornering, braking and climbing traction for the same reason
  • more stability
  • improved angle of attack when hitting rocks & roots
  • 10% lower rolling resistance - you are quantifiably faster!

Dual Suspension

Dual suspension bikes offer improved control over rough terrain by allowing the wheels to track terrain changes without losing ground contact. This is most obvious when hammering through rutted or rooty corners – the duallie will stay planted and hold a line while a hardtail will bounce and chatter.

A dual suspension bike can also save you energy because you spend more time in the saddle rather than standing to absorb the trail bumps. Don't forget the comfort factor, too. A duallie will leave you with a grin on your face instead of a fat chiropractic bill.

Hard Tails

While the dual suspension XC machine may have taken over the spotlight in a technology driven market, purists continually espouse the virtues of a classic hardtail.

Responsive to rider inputs like nothing else, these bikes are surgical in their precision. One wrong move and you may pay for it, but if you handle your tools with expertise it can deliver a ride like nothing else. This is the lightest way to fly. Plus, there are no shocks to blow or pivots to service. Did I mention they are cheaper too? The hard tail will never die.
