Rocky Mountain's Thunderbolt 770 MSL is the bike for when XC gets rowdy. Every rider loves a light, efficient bike, and the Thunderbolt is certainly that thanks to a Smoothwall carbon frame with Smoothlink rear suspension and its pro parts spec. But it's so much more than an XC race whip. With its relatively slack head angle, 120mm of plush Fox travel front and rear, and quick yet with big time rollability 27.5-inch wheels, this rig can smash through some heinous terrain. The Thunderbolt takes to the air easily, wheelies like Evil Knievel, and rolls over chunder like the boss that it is. Those specs we talked about? How about Stan's tubeless wheels and XT/XTR gearing with XT discs? Not enough? Fine. A Race Face cockpit and cranks, as well as Maxxis rubber, and Reverb dropper post maximize the ups, and perhaps more importantly, the downs as well. Now, let's get rowdy.
Rocky Mountain's Ride-9 system enables you to customize the geometry and rear suspension rate with two interlocking inserts that allow for nine different positions.
By moving the shock forward, the geometry slackens and the suspension rate becomes more progressive, giving a nice ramp up for bottomless-feeling travel (image above, dotted line). It’s ideal for aggressive downhill riding. When you move the shock backwards, the geometry becomes quicker and the suspension more supple (blue line), which is great for ripping around technical singletrack and increasing climbing traction.
When you move the shock upwards (solid black) it allows lighter riders to run shocks at higher pressures, and moving the shock downwards (red line) allows a heavier rider to run lower shock pressures. So no matter what you weigh, this allows you to run the rear shock in the sweet spot with correct sag for smooth, consistent suspension.
|Rocky Mountain's Smoothwall Carbon construction creates a frame that is just as perfect on the inside as the outside. Rocky Mountain uses an inner mold to reduce excess resin, fibers and filler to create a super high fiber-to resin ratio. The result is an incredibly lightweight, stiff and responsive ride with incredible strength.|
Rocky Mountain's Smoothlink suspension places the rear chainstay pivot above the rear axle, keeping the chain torque line parallel to the linkage. The benefit? The rear suspension is always active, bob-free, and delivers a wonderful bottomless feel, no matter what gear you're in.
