These bikes meet target two different demographics that share a similar vision.
First, you have commuters. Given the "green shift" we see all around us, many people are looking to park their cars more permanently and establish cycling as a major part of their lifestyles. This is cost-effective, stimulating to body and mind, socially responsible, and – even better – tons of fun. If you work 10km or less from work...why wouldn't you ride?
The second group of riders drawn to these bikes are recreational riders with a fitness bent. This bikes can cover big ground quickly and make for great training tools that can mix it up on asphalt, gravel, grass and even some light trail. Their versatility is their greatest asset – some even feature suspension and disc brakes for improved all-terrain capabilities.

A decade ago, Cannondale mechanics and product managers developed a bike that could swap disc-equipped 26-inch wheels with 700c wheels.
Originally, it was a race-one-day, train-the-next-day bike for our XC racers. Then we painted it matte black and sold it to the masses. Since then, black bikes have become de rigeur. |
